Dark Carrot Cake

I’m a big fan of carrot cakes, especially the dark version. In Singapore, most vendors will probably concentrate on either dark or white version, though a handful of them do serves both, but usually excel in only one. The only nice white carrot cake I know is in Toa Payoh Lorong 1, right here, I’ll be elaborating the dark version.

Quite simply, both versions of carrot cakes are distinguish by their colours to differentiate their taste. The dark one are fried with dark soy sauce and always leave a sweet aftertaste, while the opposite number tastes salty in the absence of the dark soy sauce.

I have tried many dark carrot cakes all over Singapore, including some so-called much acclaimed stalls frequenced by TV celebrities. But none of them impressed me like this stall does. Situated inside a quiet Bukit Batok coffee shop, this stall largely remains anonymous, at least to outsiders from beyond this neighbourhood. It is manned by a couple, who also serve white carrot cake, pull-trolley noodle, hokkien prawn noodle, and fried kway teow. Of the two, the husband serves better food, a few notch better than his wife.

The amount of oil is just right in providing an appealing outlook, but not too excessive that you can observe obvious trace of it on the plate or wrapper. Spiced up with spring onions and shredded radish (chai-bor), and the egg is adequately fried to give a distinctive taste of the yolk and egg white. With the right amount of dark soy sauce, the end product provides a well-balanced taste. It is obviously a work of prolonged experience, and a good one there! And the best part, prices start from only S$2!

As for their white carrot cake, I’m not sure whether I was over pampered by the excellent Cheng Sua Carrot Cakes in Toa Payoh Lorong 1, or was it my personal preference for the dark one, I found his white carrot cake still has room for improvement. While I had only tried fried kway teow from his wife, simply no good. But for his dark carrot cake at least, it’s worth trying!
